Script
1. Good morning.
Today's assembly is about when God created the world.
To create something means to make something out of
nothing.
God created the world out of nothing - and that is truly
a wonderful thing.
2. When the Apollo 8 astronauts were on
their way back from the first manned moon flight, they
sent a message to all the people on earth.
Here is part of what they said,
ASTRONAUTS: For all the people back on
earth, the crew of Apollo 8 has a message that we would
like to send you:
In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth -
and the earth was without form and void - and darkness
was upon the face of the deep. Then the Spirit of God
moved upon the face of the waters - and God said,
"Let there be light - and there was light!"
3. The words of that message are taken
from the Bible, where the story is told of the creation
of all things by God our Father.
The three astronauts on that space flight were the first
men to see some of the wonders of the earth, moon and
stars viewed from space.
4. We all admire skilled workmen and
what they produce.
God is the Master Craftsman who made the whole universe.
The astronauts' message calls on us all to open our eyes
and to think more deeply about the things God has created
out of nothing.
This is the story of Creation as told in the Bible.
5. On the first day, God made earth.
Earth was empty and dark. God said,
GOD: Let there be light.
5. And there was light. He called the
light day and the darkness night - and he saw that it was
good.
6. On the second day, God made the sky
and called it Heaven - and he saw that it was good.
7. On the third day, God separated the
sea from the dry land. He made grass, plants and fruit
trees grow on the land - and he saw that it was good.
8. On the fourth day, God made the Sun,
the Moon and the stars - and he saw that it was good.
9. On the fifth day, God made sea
creatures and birds - and he said to them,
GOD: Be fruitful and multiply.
10. On the sixth day, God made animals
to live on the land - and he made man in his own image,
to have power over every living thing. God said to them,
GOD: Be fruitful and multiply.
10. God saw everything he had made and
it was very good.
11. On the seventh day, God rested. He
blessed the seventh day and made it a day of rest - and
God was very pleased.
12. Nothing that we can make is ever
more wonderful than what God has made.
We could never make anything as beautiful as a mountain
stream - nor even anything as tiny and delicate as a
flower.
Jesus told us this when he said,
JESUS: Consider the liles of the field,
how they grow... even King Solomon in all his glory was
not arrayed like one of these.
13. Not only did God make so many
beautiful things, but he also made man - and gave him the
responsibility of looking after these beautiful things
and of using them wisely - a great responsibility indeed.
14. Let us now remember the enormity of
this task as we sing "All things bright and
beautiful" by C. Alexander (Celebration Hymnal for
Everyone number 27)
